Title: Frank Lloyd Wright and San Francisco (Hard Cover DJ) (Published by Yale University Press, New Haven and London)

Author: Turner, Paul V.

Description: Publisher’s description: Frank Lloyd Wright (1867–1959) often spent time in San Francisco, which he called "the most charming city in America." Paul V. Turner looks at the architect’s complex and evolving relationship with the city, surveying the full body of Wright’s work in the Bay Area—roughly thirty projects, a third of which were built. Spanning 1900 to 1959, they include houses, a gift shop, a civic center, a skyscraper, a church, an industrial building, a mortuary, and a bridge across the San Francisco Bay. The unbuilt structures are among Wright’s most innovative, and the diverse reasons for their failure counter long-held stereotypes about the architect. Wright’s Bay Area projects are published together here for the first time, along with previously unpublished correspondence between Wright and his clients, as well as his Bay Area associate Aaron Green. Stories from San Francisco newspapers portray the media’s changing positions on Wright—from his early personal scandals to his later roles as eccentric provocateur and celebrated creative genius. Beautifully illustrated with the architect’s original drawings and plans, Frank Lloyd Wright and San Francisco highlights aspects of the architect’s career that have never before been explored, inspiring a new understanding of Wright, his personal and client interactions, and his work. Original cover price $65.00. (First Edition)

The upper illustration is Frank Lloyd Wrights original perspective of the Anderton Court, or an adaptation of it. See Monograph 1951-1959, Pfeiffer, 1990, p.77. The second is a adaptation of Wright’s geometric abstract illustration from An Autobiography, 1943, Book Two. The illustrations were used again on the cover of Frank Lloyd Wright Week, which may have helped sponsor the event. Although not listed as a sponsor, "The Comsky Gallery, Beverley Hills, California" is printed on the cover. The booklet indicates that the Anderton Court "...is not owned and operated by Cynthia Comsky." Cynthia Comsky (1938- ) Gift from Kathryn Smith.

Description: A traveling exhibition of Wright's work, consisting of models, photographs and original drawings. A Preview of the exhibition was held in Philadelphia (January 1951). The world wide tour opened in Palazzo Strozzi Florence, Italy (June 1951). In "Sixty Years" (New York), Wright notes that from Florence the Exhibition traveled to "Switzerland, France, German and Holland". The Exhibition catalogs are dated: Paris (April 1952), Zurich (End of May 1952), Munich (May 16 - June 15, 1952), and Rotterdam (dated June 1, 1952). After two years in Europe the exhibition crossed the Atlantic to Mexico City, then to New York (1953). "La Miniatura happened as the cactus grows, in that region still showing what folk from the Middle-Western prairies did when, inclined to quit, the prosperous came loose and rolled down there into that far corner to bask in eternal sunshine... Here, then, at some length is the pictorial background against which La Miniatura, the little studio-house, is to stand: the flourishing sentimental taste into which it was born... All true building in this our land of the brave and home of the free, is a soul-trying crusade. I assure you it is, just as Fra Junipero Serra’s mission that failed was that kind of crusade. But his building that thus succeeded was not high adventure because he only brought it with him from ‘back home’ because and solely — he had none other to bring... Not so La Miniatura. This little building scientifically and afresh began to search for what was missing in all this background. And what was missing? Nothing less than a distinctly genuine expression of California in terms of modem industry and American life — that was all... Few out there seem to miss anything of the sort. But La Miniatura desired to justly call itself architecture and be able to look itself in the face. Mrs. George Madison Millard from those same Mid-Western prairies near Chicago was the heroine of its story: Mrs. Alice Millard, slender, energetic — fighting for the best of everything for everyone. Be it said she knew it, too, when he saw it. Got it if she could... The Millards had lived in a little wooden dwelling I had built for them fifteen years ago at Highland Park near Chicago. I was proud now...  Continue...

Title: Butterfly Wood. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie House West (Soft Cover) (Published by Kieran Publishing)

Author: Ooley, Robert L.

Description: George C Stewart Residence, Montecito, CA. Publisher’s Description. “Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) became a household name for architects worldwide before many architects thought it possible. Wright took full advantage of this by treating architecture as a product and not so much as a service. This recognition was largely due to his provocative architectural design and tremulous private life, both of which played well in the press at the time. Surprisingly, it still does, almost 60 years after his death.
“Butterfly Wood opens the door into one of the architect’s last commissions of his Prairie Style and is the only example of that time in his career on the west coast of the United States. Located in the secluded enclave of Montecito, California, at the corner of Hot Springs and Summit Roads is this 4,500-square-foot redwood treasure. While Wright often advocated that the Prairie House came from and is an expression of the prairies of the Midwest, here we find a perfect example of this building type that fits its landscape and blends into its surrounding as if meant to be there from the beginning of time. This story will weave together the family that wanted a coastal retreat from the hot California interior of the San Joaquin Valley, a world-renowned embattled architect, and the house they made together...”

Title: Frank Lloyd Wright. The George D. Sturges Residence (Published by Los Angeles Modern Auctions, Van Nuys, CA)

Author: Contributing Editors: Loughrey, Peter; Hines, Thomas S.; Escher, Frank; Cerio, Greg

Description: Published in conjunction with the sale of the George D. Sturges Residence (1939 - S.272). Volume includes history, drawings and photographs related to the Sturges Residence, as well as additional lots to be sold at auction on February 21, 2016. Essays by Hines, Escher and Cerio. "...Built of steel, concrete, brick and wood, the house is approached from the west at the rear just off the carport at the top of the hill. Visitors could either proceed around the encircling deck to enter through the living room on the eastern side or, as most did, through the small kitchen to the west. With less square footage than the Usonians in the Middle West, the house contains a relatively large living-dining room, two small bedrooms, and one bath on the main level. Tiny stairs lead up to the roof deck and down into the windowless basement, which Bridges used as a dark room and studio. In 1939, Wright had deputized his recent Taliesin disciple, John Lautner, to complete final details of the design and to supervise construction..." Thomas S. Hines, p.10.
