In 1910 Frank Lloyd Wright produced the "Ausgeführte Bauten und Entwürfe von Frank Lloyd Wright" (S.87), published by Ernst Wasmuth, in Berlin. Each set consisted of two portfolios with a combined total of one hundred separate plates (sheets). Printed in German. The complete set consisted of 72 plates numbered I through LXIV and included eight with a or b. 28 were tissue overlays and were attached to the corresponding plates. Each set also included a 31 page introduction, consisting of unbound sheets, folded once.
Tissues are attached to the corresponding plate by a
small fold at the top, then pasted on the back. Seeing that the tissue is seen first, we have placed tissues and plates in that order.

Plates were printed on beige and gray stiff paper with brown
ink on both tissues and plates. Some tissues and plates printed in a light black or dark gray ink. Wright never signed or initialed the illustrations. Lines are solid ink, shades of color are achieved by an irregular and un-uniformed dot pattern, unlike the uniformed dot patterns used today. The white is a solid wash.

On August 15. 1914, a deranged servant set Wright's home in Spring Green on fire. The bulk of Wright's stock of folio plates, which were to be sold in the US, were either destroyed by the fire or damaged by water: Studies and Executed Buildings By Frank Lloyd Wright, intro by Anthony Alofsin, page 8. Note water damage on this portfolio and Plate LVI.

The "Wasmuth Portfolio" is considered the most important and influential architectural monograph of the 20th century.

Title: Ausgeführte Bauten und Entwurfe von Frank Lloyd Wright. Informational Booklet (Published by Ernst Wasmuth, A.-G. Berlin.) (Note: This set is missing the original pages 1-20, but includes photocopies of those pages. Second copy includes pages 17-31.)

Author: Wright, Frank Lloyd

Description: Each two volume set of prints included a 31 page introduction, consisting of 8 sheets printed both sides folded once, but unbound. They are loosely placed next to each other. Pages 3 - 20 is Wright’s introduction, printed in German. "To thus make of a dwelling place a complete work of art, in itself as expressive and beautiful and more intimately related to life than anything of detached sculptures or painting, lending itself freely and suitably to the individual needs of the dwellers, an harmonious entity fitting in color, pattern and nature the utilities – and in itself really an expression of them in character -- this is the modern American opportunity.
Once founded, this will become a tradition, a vast step in advance of the day when a dwelling was an arrangement of separate rooms, mere chambers to contain aggregations of furniture, the utility comforts not present. An organic entity this, as contrasted with that aggregation: surely a higher ideal of unity, a higher and more intimate working out of the expression of one's life in one's environment. One thing instead of many things; a great instead of a collection of smaller ones... Frank Lloyd Wright, Florence, Italy, May 15, 1910. Pages 21 - 30 is a list and description of each plate. Page 31 is Wrights acknowledgment: "Charles E. Roberts, Francis W. Little and Darwin D. Martin - three American men of affairs, who have believed in and befriended this work when natural opposition from without and inherent faults within threatened to make an end to it. Without their faith and help this work would never have reached its present development. Frank Lloyd Wright." Part of a nearly complete two volume set acquired from Bruxelles, Belgium. Title: Ausgeführte Bauten und Entwurfe von Frank Lloyd Wright. Plate I (1 Tissue) Entrance details of the Winslow Residence. (Published by Ernst Wasmuth, A.-G. Berlin.)

Author: Wright, Frank Lloyd

Description: Plate I (1 Tissue) - House for Mr. W. H. Winslow in River Forest, Illinois. Entrance detail. Many of the features which have since characterize this work originated in this house. The setting of the basement outside the main walls of the house to form a preparation for the projecting sill courses; the division of the exterior wall surfaces into body and frieze; changing the material above the second-story sill line, the wide level eaves, with low sloping roofs; the one massive chimney; and the feeling for contrast between plain wall surface and richly decorated and concentrated masses; the use of the window as a decorative feature unit in itself; the lines of the building extending into the grounds, the low walls and parterre utilized to associate it with its site. A beautiful elm standing near gave the suggestion for the mass of the building." The tissue illustrates the decorative border around the doors and windows as well as the large urn near the entrance. Title: Ausgeführte Bauten und Entwurfe von Frank Lloyd Wright. Suburban dwelling for Mrs. Martin, Oak Park, Ill. Plate XIX (19) (Published by Ernst Wasmuth, A.-G. Berlin.)

Author: Wright, Frank Lloyd

Description: Plate XIX (19). Perspective, plot and floor plan for the Mrs. Martin Residence. "Suburban dwelling for Mrs. Martin, Oak Park, Ill." "A practical solution of the porch problem. It is treated here as a semi-detached pavilion placed within the grounds to the south, but not shutting out the sunlight from the living-rooms. The house is a plastered house, and the eaves are plastic in form." The Fricke-Martin Residence was designed for William G. Fricke by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1901. He lived in the home for five years until it was purchased by Emma Martin in 1906-7. The upper illustration is a perspective, viewed from the west. The covered porch was later demolished and the lot was sold. The plot plan shows the garage addition, designed by Wright in 1907 after Mrs. Martin purchased the home. The illustration on the right is the second level. Emboss Upper left. Part of a nearly complete two volume set acquired from Bruxelles, Belgium. (First Edition) (Sweeney 87)

Author: Wright, Frank Lloyd

Description: Plate XIX (19). Drawing of the William G. Fricke Home (1901 S.058). "Suburban dwelling for Mrs. Martin, Oak Park, Ill." Like the Thomas Residence, also 1901 and in Oak Park, it is an all-stucco exterior. But unlike the Thomas Residence which is considered Frank Lloyd Wright’s first fully developed prairie styled house in Oak Park, it includes elements of Wright’s transitional designs like the Rollin Furbeck Residence: Corners turned at a 45 degree angle; Massive central tower; Rectangular square windows with columns; More vertical than Wright’s prairie styled horizontal designs. It is also a three story home. The Living and Dining Rooms, Kitchen, Hall and Reception Room are on the first level. The Bedrooms are on the second level. (First Edition) (Sweeney 87)

Title: Ausgeführte Bauten und Entwurfe von Frank Lloyd Wright. Ground plan of the D. D. Martin. Plate XXXII (32 Tissue) (Published by Ernst Wasmuth, A.-G. Berlin.)

Description: Plate XXXII (32 Tissue). Ground and floor plan for the Darwin Martin House. "Ground plan of the D. D. Martin. Reference to the general plan of the Martin house will show certain freestanding groups of piers. In the central chamber formed by the piers the radiators are located, and the lighting fixtures are concentrated upon the peers themselves. Bookcases, swinging out ward, are placed below between the peers: the open spaces above are utilized as cabinets, and from these the heat passes into the rooms. Fresh air is let into the central chamber through openings between the piers and the bookcases. The radiators and the appurtenance systems are thus made an artistic feature of the architecture. Description: Plate XXXIII (33 Tissue). View of the interior of the Larkin Administration Building from the second level. "Administration building of the Larkin Company, Interior. The Larkin Building is one of a large group of factory buildings situated in the factory district of Buffalo. It was built to house the commercial engine of the Larkin Company in light wholesome well-ventilated quarters. The smoke, noise and dirt incident to the locality made it imperative that all exterior surfaces be self-cleaning and the interior be created independently of this environment. The building is a simple working out of certain utilitarian conditions, its exterior a simple cliff of brick whose only ornamental feature is the exterior expression of the central aisle, fashioned by means of the sculptured piers at either end of the main block. The machinery of the various appurtenance systems, pipe shafts incidental thereto, the heating and ventilating air in-takes, and the stairways which serve also as fire-escapes, are quartered in plan and placed outside the main building at the four outer corners so that the entire area might be free for working purposes. Author: Wright, Frank Lloyd

Description: Plate XXXIII (33). Ground plan and perspective view of the Larkin Administration Building. "Ground plan and perspective view of the administration building of the Larkin Company. The interior of the main building thus forms a single large room in which the main floors are galleries open to a large central court, which is also lighted from above. All the windows of the various stories or galleries are seven feet above the floor, the space beneath being utilized for steel filing cabinets. The window sash are double and the building practically sealed to dirt, odor and noise, fresh air being taken high above the ground in shafts extending above the roof surfaces. The interior is executed throughout in vitreous, cream colored brick with floor and trimmings of magnesite of the same color. The various features of this trim were all formed within the building itself by means of simple wooden moulds, in most cases being worked directly in place. So the decorative forms were necessarily simple, particularly so as this material becomes very hot while setting and expands slightly in the process. The furnishings and fittings are all of steel and were designed with the structure. Emboss center left. Part of a nearly complete two volume set acquired from Bruxelles, Belgium. The structure, which is completely fireproof, together with its modern heating, ventilating and appurtenance system, but exclusive of metal fixtures and furnishings, cost but little more than the average high class fireproof factory building. 18 cents per cubic foot. Here again, most of the critic's architecture has been left out. Therefore the work may have the same claim to consideration as a work of art as an ocean liner, a locomotive or a battle ship. Description: Plate XLVII (47). Central club house for the Como Orchard Summer Colony. Designed to give accommodation to a group of university men owning adjoining orchards and wishing to live near in summer time. An arrangement of simple wooden cabins with a central clubhouse, we're all go for meals, and transients may also be accommodated with rooms." Perspective view of the central club house for the Como Orchard Summer Colony. The clouds in the illustration have a light white wash. In February 1909 Frank Lloyd Wright visited the Bitterroot Valley. The first of the two developments, the Como Orchard Summer Colony, consisting of the Master Plan, the Clubhouse and Inn, Cottages and the Manager’s Office. Developed for the Como Orchard Land Company, a subsidiary of the Bitter Root Valley Irrigation Company, they were marketed to University of Chicago Professors as "University Heights Community and Orchards." The Clubhouse was conceived as the center of the community. It consisted of two communal Dining Rooms, one on either side, a two story lounge in the center for gathering, three fireplaces, guest bedrooms upstairs, a kitchen and servants rooms, and large porches that ran the length of the front. A open balcony overlooked the lounge. With communal Dining Rooms in the Clubhouse, most Cottages were designed without kitchens. All buildings were board and batten, the windows were designed with wood mullions. An irrigation channel from Lake Como ran through the development’s 1600 acres. Of the over fifty cottages that were planned, twelve were constructed. Today, one Cottage and the Manager’s office remain and are maintained. Wright created two other plates related to Como Orchard. Plate XLVI(a) General perspective view of Como Orchard Summer Colony and Plate XLVI(b) Plan of Como Orchard Summer Colony. For more information on the Como Orchard and Bitterroot. Emboss bottom left. Title: Ausgeführte Bauten und Entwüürfe von Frank Lloyd Wright. Perspectives for three different styles of houses for the Waller subdivision. Plate XLVIII (48) (Published by Ernst Wasmuth A.-G., Berlin) Gray paper.

Author: Wright, Frank Lloyd

Description: Plate XLVIII (48). "Three typical houses for real-estate subdivision for Mr. E. C. Waller. Hip roof, flat roof and gable. Illustrations of three different styles of houses. Edward Carson Waller was a successful real estate developer in Chicago and one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s early clients. In 1895 Wright designed the Francisco Terrace Apartments (S.030), and the Edward C. Waller Apartments (S.031). In 1899 Wright remodeled Waller’s home in River Forest (S.047). "In 1905 Waller obtained for Wright the opportunity to remodel the lobby of the Rookery Building... A series of multiple housing schemes for Waller and his son Edward, Jr., kept the Wright office busy intermittently from 1901 to 1909; attention was also given during this period to plans for the further subdivision of the family property in River Forest. For this project Wright designed three houses with variants to be built speculatively; although none was ever constructed, these schemes were, as Grant Manson has pointed out, very influential on Walter Burley Griffin and John Van Bergen." Two Chicago Architects, Eaton, p.92-93. Emboss lower left. Three copies. One copy: stamped on verso: "The Art Institute of Chicago. Burnham Library of Architecture." Title: Ausgeführte Bauten und Entwüürfe von Frank Lloyd Wright. Elevation and Cross Section of the Unity Temple. Plate LXIII (63T) (Published by Ernst Wasmuth A.-G., Berlin)

Author: Wright, Frank Lloyd

Description: Plate LXIII (63 Tissue). Elevation and cross section of the Unity Temple. A concrete monolith cast in wooden moulds or ‘forms’. After removing the forms the exterior surfaces are washed clean to expose the small gravel aggregate, the finished result in texture and effect being not unlike a coarse granite. The columns, with their decoration, were cast and treated in the same way. The entrance is common to both buildings, and connects them at the center. Both are lighted from above. The roofs are simple reinforced concrete slabs, waterproofed. The auditorium is a frank revival of the old temple form, as better suited to the requirements of a modern congregation then the nave and transept of the cathedral type." Buildings, Plans And Designs (English 1963)

32 Page Booklet

Date: 1963

Title: Buildings, Plans And Designs, Frank Lloyd Wright (Folio) (Published by Horizon Press, New York) (First Edition 1963 Printing)

Author: Wright, Frank Lloyd; Forward by Peters, William Wesley

Description: In 1910, Frank Lloyd Wright published the Wasmuth Portfolio entitled "Ausgeführte Bauten und Entwürfe". It consisted of 100 loose elephant folio plates of drawings and plans by Wright and was published by Ernst Wasmuth in Berlin. In 1963 Horizon Press republished the complete set in its original size, including the case shown here. Also includes a 32 page booklet. One thing instead of many things; a great instead of a collection of smaller ones..." Frank Lloyd Wright. Number 34 E of 2600. Number 340 C of 2600. Author: Anthony Alofsin, Curator.

Description: "Frank Lloyd Wright was in the forefront of modern architects who realized the tremendous potential impact of how architecture is represented. He understood the power of the print media to reach myriads of individuals who would never directly experience his buildings... The folios are the most beautiful compendium of his early work, and they convey the intense interest Wright had in the perfected representation of his architecture... Published over 80 years ago, the plates of the Wasmuth monograph remain works of art, yet these precious objects sill contain within then the power to transform architecture into an ideal representation of how life could be lived.
