Robert’s grandfather homesteaded in the 1860. When they took
over the family farm, they found the two-story farm house
inadequate for their family’s needs. They were uninspired by the
local architects and contacted Frank Lloyd Wright. On a trip to
Taliesin, Spring Green, in the Summer of 1948, they met Frank
Lloyd Wright and made the decision to have him design their
house. It would be another two years before they would see the
first set of plans. They needed a "farmhouse." A large dining
room and kitchen for feeding groups of farmhands, but separated
from their living room. Wright provided a solution. Initial
plans separate the living room and bedroom wing from the dining,
kitchen and office with a covered breeze way. They were pleased
with the plans, but an open walkway on cold winter nights was
not practical. The breeze way was enclosed. The open breeze way

Set of 96 photographs of the Muirhead Residence. Designed by
Frank Lloyd Wright in 1950. On a trip to Chicago we decided to
locate the Muirhead Residence. With only a street name in Pluto
Center, which is an area, not a town, we began our search for
the Muirhead Residence. After searching, back and forth a number
of times, we stopped at one of the houses to seek direction.
"Sure, its back that direction about a mile and you have to
drive under the railroad tracks." It turned out to be fairly
accurate. Robert and Elizabeth Muirhead were farmers, on the
same...

They still needed a "farmhouse." A large dining room and
kitchen for feeding groups of farmhands, but separated from

room. Wright provided a solution. Initial plans separate the
living room and bedroom wing from the dining, kitchen and
office with a covered breeze way. They were pleased with the
plans, but an open walkway on cold winter nights was not
practical. The breeze way was enclosed.
As you approach the house from the Northeast, the Dining
Room and Kitchen wing is behind the cantilevered Carport,
facing the barns and out buildings. Past the breeze way, the
center section makes up the one and a half story Living Room
and Master Bedroom. The Bedroom wing with five bedrooms is
on the Southwest end of the residence. It is constructed of
brick, cypress and glass.

Our intent is to record the details
that create the totality of the design, creating a complete
picture. Photographed during a trip to Chicago, by Douglas
M. Steiner on October 22, 2019. In an effort to expedite
adding these photographs to this website, we have dispensed
