Description: Perspective view of the Fredrick Residence. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1954/6. Wright’s first design for the Fredricks was a Usonian Automatic. Constructed of inexpensive concrete blocks. Wright presented the drawings of the Usonian Automatic to the Fredricks in 1954. Title: National Register of Historic Places, Louis Fredrick (Digital and printed copy) (Published by the National Park Service and the National Register of Historic Places, Washington D.C.)

Author: Eifler, John

Description: The Louis Fredrick House is a 1 story masonry and wood frame modern house, located on a large 10 acre property in Barrington, IL. The house is located approximately 5 miles west of Barrington on County Line Road, a local highway. A long, winding entry drive provides visual and acoustic separation from the road. Built nestled into a hillside, the house reflects Wright’s belief that a building should be "of" the hill, rather than on top of it. The house is designed with a central pavilion consisting of a living room, dining room and kitchen with two "wings" containing the bedrooms in one and a playroom on the other. Extensive use of glass provides a sweeping view of the landscape to the north (rear) of the house. In contrast, the south entry court is somewhat enclosed by the slope of the hill, a brick retaining wall and reflecting pool, creating a calm, intimate setting... Includes 22 photographs and illustrations. (Digital and printed copy)

As you approach the house from the street below, the drive leads you to the top of the hill. The house is placed blow the crest on the opposite side of the drive, setting on 10 acres. Designed on a four-foot module it is constructed of tan colored brick, Philippine mahogany and glass. The house is 128' long and approximately 2800 square feet. The ceiling in the entryway is 6' 6" high, and opens to over 20' as you enter the living room. The Living room is dominated by a massive floor to ceiling fireplace. The floor is poured concrete, with four-foot modules scored into the finished slab. The primary section of the house contains the Living, Dining room and kitchen, with a bedroom wing extended on the Southeast side. A separate playroom is at the end of a gallery that extends on the Northwest side.
Our intent is to record the details that create the totality of the design, creating a complete picture. Photographed during a trip to Chicago, by Douglas M. Steiner on October 22, 2019. In an effort to expedite adding these photographs to this website, we have dispensed with a description for each photograph. Set of 52 high res 20 X 13.5 digital images.
