Florida Southern College, Science, Cosmography and Planetarium Building
(Poke), Lakeland, Florida, 2017 (1953 - S.256). Set of 45 exterior and 31
interior photographs of the Science and Cosmography
Building, photographed on April 4, 2017. On a trip to
Florida, we took the opportunity to visit and photograph the
Florida Southern College Campus. April 4 was a beautiful,
sunny Florida spring day. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in
1953, it was later named the Polk County Science Building
after the local community raised funds for its construction.
The Polk County Science Building was the last Wright
designed structure built on the Florida Southern College
campus and was completed on March 11, 1958. Frank Lloyd
Wright’s last visit to the campus was in March of 1957, when
he spoke at the March Founders' Week.
Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer wrote, “As early as 1941 plans were
made, very sketchily at that time, for a cosmography
building that would provide classrooms and an observatory.
But not until 1953 was the college ready to proceed with the
necessary funds to erect such a building. Then it was
decided to combine the various sciences: agriculture
(citrus), arboretum, biology, biochemistry, chemistry,
physics, mathematics and cosmography into one large "L"
shaped
structure. Of course the necessary classrooms

and lecture
rooms are incorporated along with laboratories and
exhibition areas. The esplanade that connects all the Frank
Lloyd Wright buildings on this campus engages this one as
well, and becomes part of its southwest elevation.”

The complex is comprised of five distinct sections: citrus;
physics and mathematics; biology and chemistry; cosmography
(earth science); astronomy with the domed planetarium. The
sections are knit together by the roof and esplanades, and
the whole complex extends over 400 feet long. The once open
breezeways are now fully enclosed. The buildings are
constructed of patterned and perforated textile blocks,
concrete, copper fascia and aluminum columns.
We
have assembled a set of 45 exterior and 31 interior
photographs of the Science and Cosmography Building,
photographed by Douglas M. Steiner on April 4, 2017. These
photographs aim to capture and preserve a moment in time,
documenting the intricate details that contribute to the
overall design and reflecting the current condition of the
buildings. To expedite their addition to our website, we
have chosen to omit individual descriptions for each image.

Florida Southern College, Industrial Arts Building,
Lakeland, Florida, 2017 (1942 - S.254). Set of 36 exterior
and 32 interior photographs of the Industrial Arts Building,
photographed on April 4, 2017. On a trip to Florida, we took
the opportunity to visit and photograph the Florida Southern
College Campus, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright from 1939 to
1954. The Industrial Arts Building was the fourth, designed
in 1942. April 4 was a beautiful, sunny Florida spring day.
Originally designed in 1942 as a student center, it was
redesigned in 1950 as the Ordway Industrial Arts Building.
Wright visited the campus on October 24, 1951 and inspected
the 30,000 square foot building. It was dedicated in March
1952 and called the Horsey Building, after J. William
Horsey, a Canadian businessman and early supporter of the
building. It was rededicated in 1956 as the Lucius Pond
Ordway Building. The center section of the building included
the Pavilion and Amphitheater with an inner grass court yard
on either side. The Pavilion was used as the Student Lounge.
The Industrial Arts Building was photographed shortly after
the completion of the building, and published in the
September 1952 issue of
Architectural
Forum.
As
initially designed, the entrance on the Southwest corner
lead into the large open Refectory (dining hall), with a
kitchen on the East end. Two wings fed to the north. The
center wing, with a grass court yard on either side, is the
pavilion and amphitheater. The Pavilion was used as the
Student Lounge. The East wing housed the Metal and Wood
Working Shops. The North section housed the Industrial Arts.
The Esplanade on the West side created the larger of the two
inner courts.
Bruce
Brooks Pfeiffer wrote, “The preliminary drawings for the
Industrial Arts Building were made in 1942, the working
drawings were finished and signed in the late autumn of
1949. During the war years — from 1941 to 1946 - there was
little building going on, and Dr. Spivey was continually
faced with the problem of raising money, especially for a
project of this sort |

which was particularly large, in comparison with the other
Frank Lloyd Wright buildings on the campus. The working
drawings, however, closely conform to the original plan
which was to provide space for a drafting room, weaving
pavilion, craft shops for metalwork, woodwork and ceramics,
a refectory with domestic sciences, a lecture amphitheatre
and recreation pavilion.

of each is individual, but the concrete block details and
the connecting esplanades tie the whole together.”

“The Lucius Pond Ordway Industrial Arts Building (1950-1952)
was built as a home for the College’s courses in carpentry,
metalworking, automobile mechanics, cooking, and home
economics. Wright considered this building to be his
personal favorite on campus, due to its simplicity and
perceived practicality. The centerpiece of the building is
the Fletcher Theatre, the only theater-in-the-round of
Wright’s design ever constructed. Today, the Ordway Building
serves as the home of Florida Southern’s social sciences

Textile block construction was used throughout the Frank
Lloyd Wright designed buildings at Florida Southern College
from 1938 - 1954, and again in 2013 in the FSC Usonian
House. The aggregate mixture for the concrete block would
consist of soil and crushed stone from the building's site,
creating a light tan mix. Explore the campus and you’ll
