George Millard was the manager of the rare book department
at A. C. McClurg’s bookstore on Wabash Avenue in downtown
Chicago. He began his employment in 1875. In 1895, George M.
Millard was one of the fifteen founding members of the
Caxton Club. Herbert S. Stone, W. Irving Way and
Chauncey L.
Williams were also founding members. All fifteen were
charter members, and served as the first board of directors
or council.
In the
late 1890s, Alice visited McClurg’s, inquiring about a
biography of William Morris. Her interest was Morris and the
Arts and Crafts movement. He shared with her that he was
friends with Morris and also book designer and binder T.J.
Cobden-Sanderson. They fell in love and they married at St.
Bride's Church in London. He was 27 years her senior.
In 1906 Frank Lloyd wright was commissioned to design a home
in Highland Park. Six years later he retired. “George M.
Millard Leaves Mcclurg. George M. Millard has withdrawn from
the house of A.C McClurg & Co., Chicago, to take effect May
1. About the year 1875 the late General A.C McClurg selected
Millard, who was then a general salesman and requested him
to devote his energies to creating and developing a
department of fine books. Since that time Mr. Millard has
been in charge of this branch of McClurg's business and the
department has grown to large proportions and has become
recognized for its high standing. Eugene Field's well known
Saints and Sinners Corner forms one of the chapters in the
history of the department. Mr. Millard has made frequent
book purchasing trips to Europe. Upon his return from one of
these pilgrimages, Field thus announced the fact in his
daily Sharps and Flats column in the Chicago News. Mr.
Millard is not retiring from the rare book field although
future plans have not yet been fully decided upon.” The
Publishers weekly, April 20, 1912.
In 1914, only eight
year after commissioning Frank Lloyd Wright, they moved to
Pasadena. Although George was semi-retired, they continued
dealing in rare books. He past away in 1918 at
|

about the age of 72, she was in her early
40s. She continued dealing in rare books, and in 1923, she
commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design a second home, La
Miniatura.
Although Wright described it as “A simple wooden house in
the woods,” it had some beautiful details that made it
anything but simple. Cantilevered bedrooms on either end of
the second level. Sixty-eight art glass windows. The angle
of the diamonds in the art-glass windows mirror those of the
roof line. It is beautifully trimmed in what appears to be
oak. My initial plan was to upload the photographs and be
done with this study, but the more I studied the house, the
more complex it became.
What is not simple is Frank Lloyd Wright perspective
presentation drawing of the house. Dramatic enough that
Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer decided to give it a two-page spread
in Frank Lloyd Wright, Complete Works 1885-1916, 2011,
p.268-269. Wright may have taken liberty with the drawing.
The house is surrounded by woods. The approach to the house
is an arched bridge over a ravine on the right. A low wall,
the height of the terrace wall, extends past the bridge to
the edge of the illustration. It also extends a short
distance on the left side of the house. The entrance is on
the left, the covered terrace is in the center foreground.
The photograph of the Millard house, circa 1910, published
in both FLW, Ausgeführte Bauten (1911) and Sonderheft: FLW
(1911), shows the low wall to the right, but there is no
photographic record of the bridge over the ravine. The 1906
floor plan in the Avery Library does not indicate where the
driveway was placed. One interesting note is by 1910, when
Wright published Ausgefüührte Bauten und Entwüürfe von Frank
Lloyd Wright in 1910, Wright includes the ground and floor
plan of the house, and the drive is coming into the house
from the left. This might indicate that Wright suggested
entry over the bridge during the design process, but the
ground plan shows reality. Today, there is a sidewalk where
the drive was indicated, and the driveway runs along the
back side of the house.
By all indications, both the East and West ends of the
second floor were cantilevered. Although it is difficult to
see through the woods in the 1910 photograph of the Millard
House, the West end was cantilevered. By 1935-1945 when
Gilman Lane photographed the house, the space under the West
cantilever was fully enclosed, and windows added. Two are
visible on the South elevation of the enclosure and it
appears four on the East elevation. It remains that way as
of this date. Today, an attached garage on the Northeast
corner is visible.
