contractor in the Chicago area. Adam’s first collaboration with
Frank Lloyd Wright was on Wright’s first major commission, the
Winslow Residence. Although both the Residence and Stable were
designed in 1894, it is not clear who the contractor was for the
house, but it is clear that William Adams built the Stables, his
signature was on the plans, "Frank

to have two large rooms with windows and a closet. Basement

residences in the city of Chicago by Frank Lloyd Wright.
Designed in 1900 and built early the following year, this house
represents an important period of experimentation in the
architect's career, extending from roughly 1893 through 1910,
during which Wright laid the theoretical basis for the formation
of the Prairie School. In addition to its interest relative to
its design and its architect, this structure is unique in that
its original owner was a contractor who had previously built a
number of residences from designs by Wright. As such, the Jessie
and William Adams House represents a singular statement of the
relationship between the architect and one of his builders."

and Jessie Adams Residence, Chicago 2019 (1900 - S.048). On a
trip to Chicago, we had the opportunity to tour the Adams
Residence. The exterior of the home was similar to others of
this early period, the Woolley (1893) and
Goan (1893). It
was nearly the last of his early houses before his design
for the full fledged prairie styled house, the Bradley house
of the same year. The exterior of the Adams hinted at
prairie elements. But what was most startling was the
interior of the Adams residences. William Adams was a
successful contractor in the Chicago area. Adams was born in Dairy, Ayrshire,
Scotland on February. 3, 1861. Jessie Browning was born in
Tampa, Florida. They were married on October 10, 1895. He
formed the William Adams Company with his brother in 1895.
He worked with a number of architects in the Chicago area.
The "Book of Chicagoans," 1917., A. N. Marquis & Company,
Chicago, indicates that Adams was also the vice president of
the Seven Troughs Coalition Mining Co., Rochester Mines Co.,
and Rochester Continued Mines Co., and the director of the
Bates Expanded Steel Truss Co.
Adams' first collaboration with Frank Lloyd Wright was on
Wright’s first major commission, the
Winslow Residence.
Although both the Residence and Stable were designed in
1894, it is not clear who the contractor was for the house,
but it is clear that William Adams built the Stables, his
signature was on the plans,

In
1900, Adams commissioned Wright to design a home for
himself. The design is much simpler in style than the Heller
|
|
and Husser,
stereotypical of Wright’s earlier work. The design was
basically a square, with the
addition of the covered porch on the front and the extension
of the kitchen in the back. The lower level includes the
living and dining rooms, kitchen and a bathroom. The upper
level includes four bedrooms and a bath. But the interior is
anything but stereotypical. The interior is stunning. The
depth and intricacy of the oak trim. And, a repeat of the
triple-row checkerboard pattern carved into the horizontal
edges of the trim, seen in the Husser House. Very few
photographs exist of the demolished Husser House, but, here
it is resurrected in the Adams interior. The art glass is
also stunning, from the windows and doors, to the art glass
in the built-in cabinetry. It adds a richness and depth not
realized from the exterior view alone.
Upon entering to the home, you pass through the vestibule
and the inner front door. To the left is the Living Room,
straight ahead is the stairway to the second floor, and past
the stairway is the Kitchen. To the right is the Reception
Room. The Dining Room is reached from the Living Room, or
from the back by way of the Kitchen.
In 1913 the footprint was enlarged, extending the back of
the house as-well-as that addition of a garage. Between
April and November, one room was added directly behind the
dining room, and on the Northwest corner the kitchen was
enlarged on both the west and north elevations, breaking the
square footprint. Adams hired architect Robert Hyde to
