Description: Ground and floor plan for the Allen Residence, FLLW #1701.06. The house floor plan is “L” shaped, but when including the tea house and wall on the two opposite sides, the ground plan forms a square. The living room wing is one story, the bedroom wing is two. As you enter the house from the Porte Cochere, the red tiles covering the floor of the porte cochere continue into the entry hall. A fireplace warms the entry hall. Built-in seating and shelves are to the right. Interior brick mortar is gild. Up four stairs to the main level and the red tiles continue in the upper hall. Stairs lead to the second floor. Straight ahead is the dining room and the kitchen beyond. A red tile walkway continues into the living room, extending past the doors leading to the terrace and continuing to the far end of the living room. Red tiles flow outside and cover the terrace surface. Both the dining room and living room have fireplaces. They both have built-in ceiling light fixtures. The dining room light screens are chevron-patterned. The living room’s are geometrtic in style, utilizing squares and rectangles. The second floor included four bedrooms, Mrs. Allen’s sitting room and Mr. Allen’s study. The outdoor garden and pool were designed with as much care as the house itself. Henry J. Allen Residence, Wichita, Kansas 2024 (1916 - S.205). Set of 65 exterior and 82 interior photographs of the Allen Residence. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1916. On a trip from Nashville to Seattle, we had the opportunity to visit and tour the Allen Residence. The house floor plan is “L” shaped, but when including the tea house and wall on the two opposite sides, the ground plan forms a square. The living room wing is one story, the bedroom wing is two. The entrance hall, and a portion of the living room are tiled. The living room opens to a terrace, pool and walled garden. The living room tile continues out to the terrace.
Henry Allen was the 21st Governor of Kansas (1919–1923) and a U.S. Senator from Kansas (1929–1931). He was editor and publisher of the Wichita Beacon. In 1916, Allen commissioned Wright to design a home in Wichita. A beautifully designed prairie styled home, it is the only Wright designed home in Kansas. Meticulously restored, USA Today named it one of the top 10 Frank Lloyd Wright houses to visit. It has retained the original furniture and art glass windows.
As you enter the house from the Porte Cochere, the red tiles covering the floor of the porte cochere continue into the entry hall. A fireplace warms the entry hall. Built-in seating and shelves are to the right. Interior brick morter is gild. Up four stairs to the main level and the red tiles continue in the upper hall. Stairs lead to the second floor. Straight ahead is the dining room and the kitchen beyond. A red tile walkway continues into the living room, extending past the doors leading to the terrace and continuing to the far end of the living room. Both the dining room and living room have fireplaces. They both have built-in ceiling light fixtures. The dining room light screens are chevron-patterned. The living room’s are geometrticin style, utilizing squares and rectangles. The second floor included four bedrooms, Mrs. Allen’s sitting room and Mr. Allen’s study. The outdoor garden and pool were designed with as much care as the house itself.
Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer writes, “During the planning stage, Mr. Allen asked Mr. Wright to reduce the size of the living room wing by one unit, making the space narrower on the garden terrace side. Mr. Wright tried to convince his client that considering the amount of formal entertaining he did, the room made narrower would seem somewhat cramped. But Mr. Allen insisted.
“Years later, when Mr. and Mrs. Wright and the Taliesin Fellowship made their annual treks across country from Wisconsin to Taliesin West in Arizona, they were always invited by the Allens to stop in Wichita for dinner and to spend the night. During one of these visits to Wichita, when Mr. Allen was showing his beautiful home to the Wrights and the apprentices, he turned to Mr. Wright and asked, "Frank, why did you let me reduce the size of the living room? I have regretted it ever since. You should have fought me on it and had your way with the original plan!" "Henry," Mr. Wright replied, "I tried to persuade you, but you were so adamant about that reduction that I was afraid that if I were too insistent it might cost me the entire job. Even so, the house you got was one of my best."

Title: Frank Lloyd Wright Wall Sconces. Pair, Circa 1908.
Description: Two original wall sconces used in a number of Frank Lloyd Wright's prairie house commissions. We have identified ten Wright designed homes and buildings, to date, where these fixtures are used. Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio (1889-1911), Westcott (1904), Robie (1906), Coonley Residence (1907) and Coach House (1911), Meyer May (1908), Isabel Roberts (1908), Hotel Geneva (1911), Oscar Balch (1911), Allen (1916).
Not only did Frank Lloyd Wright design houses and building, but the furnishings and lighting. Lighting styles included the chandelier, the single- and double-pedestal table lamps and wall sconces.
Sconces are manufactured in brass and mahogany. The brass base is square: 3.906" x 3.906" x 0.59". Brass pins in the center of each side holds the wood in place. Four brass screws hold the pedestal in place. The socket assembly and screws also appear to be brass. Stamped on the exterior of the socket assembly: "Perkins. Pat. June 13-99. 3 A. 250 V." A round "nut" with a threaded tube is embedded in the wood base. The socket is screwed to the threaded tube and secured by a small headless screw. Although the socket is clearly manufactured by Perkins, the sconce itself has no manufacturing marks. Some of these sconces had pull cords to turn the light off and on, this set did not. Size: The wood base within the brass is square: 3.75" x 3.75" x .5". The brass pedestal is a sleeve that slides over the electrical socket. The square base of the pedestal is 3.4375' x 3.4375". The neck of the pedestal is square and is 1.75" x 1.75" x 2.28". The top of the pedestal is 2.125" x 2.125" x 31". Overall height: 3.25".
