CHARLES A. BROWN RESIDENCE (2019)

Charles A. Brown Residence, Evanston, Illinois, Exterior 2019 (1905 - S.110). Set of 45 exterior photographs of the Brown Residence. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1905. The exterior walls of the house are board and batten, and extend up to the sills of the second floor windows. The horizontal band of windows and stucco, surrounds all four side and extends to the roof line. The sills match the light color of the stucco. The windows are trimmed in wood, and trim is also used to as a design element between windows. A striking feature of the house is the roof that is cantilevered over the veranda.
Like the Davenport Residence (1901), the house is approached on the far left side of the property. The front door faces the street, but is enclosed and partially obscured from the street by a short wall. Stepping into the semi-enclosed exterior space, the front door opens into a tiled entry. On the right is a partial wall topped with square balusters. Stairs lead up to the living room that runs the full length of the front of the house. On the far end of the living room a partial wall topped with square balusters is repeated, creating a room within a room. From the living room, doors open outward to the half-walled veranda. The dining room and kitchen cover the back half of the first floor. Upstairs there are four bedrooms and a bath.
On one of the Brown Residence plans in the Frank Lloyd Wright Archives, is a hand written note “Model Home Evanston.” Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer speculates that there may have been plans

for a housing project. Although no other plans have been found to date, that would substantiate a Evanston Housing project, it could have possibly been similar to the Burnham Street or the Charles Roberts Housing Project. Henry-Russel Hitchcock also refers to the Brown House as the Evanston Model Home, In the Nature of Materials, 1942. Thomas Heinz points out that there is a similarly designed house several blocks away at 815 Lincoln Street. It is interesting to note that in the May 10, 1902 issue of The Economist, p.606 it was announced that a Charles A. Brown purchased 46 lots in “E.T. Paul’s Addition to Evanston.”
There is nearly an identically designed house in Gary, Indiana, the Ingwald Moe House, dated 1909 by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. But the Foundation number, 0531, would indicate 1905. It is interesting to note that the Foundation number for the Brown House is 0503, and is dated 1905. The Moe house is dated 1908 by Thomas Heinz. On the other hand, William Storrer argues that it is not a Frank Lloyd Wright commission.
A photograph of the Brown House was published in the October, 1913 issue of House Beautiful, p.134, and in Modern American Homes, von Holst, 1913, plate 90.
