Title
: Lake Tahoe Summer Colony, Lake Tahoe, California, 1922 Project (FLLW #2205.26).

Description: Perspective view of the Lake Tahoe Summer Colony Wigwam design. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1922, it included three types of cottages. Shore-Types, built on the lake’s shore, Cabin Types and Wigwam Types, built in the forest. He also designed cottages that floated out on Lake Tahoe. The Lake Tahoe Summer Colony would remain a project, but the concept would be resurrected in the future.
In 1949, Wright designed the Thomas C. Lea House (FLLW #4910), a variation of the original Lake Tahoe Summer Colony project (1922). Where the Lake Tahoe consisted mostly of cottages and cabins, a bedroom wing was added to the Lea House. When Thomas Lea did not proceed with the project, slight modifications were made to the plans, and presented to
Dr. Richard & Madelyn Davis. Although the Davis was the second “Wigwam” design to be built, the Davis is the closest to the original Lake Tahoe design. After 28 years, Wright’s Wigwam concept finally became a reality. Text lower left: “Tahoe Cabin. Big Tree Type... Description: Copy photograph of 1950 floor plan for the Davis residence, published in September 1960 House & Home. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1950. From the carport, the front door leads into the entryway. The small windows cut into the front door mimic the hexagonal shape of the houses’ Teepee foot print. To the right of the entry is the workspace and utility room, both set inside masonry walls, the studio and the bedroom wing. Dividing the entry from the living room is a shelf, cabinet and built-in seating. In the center of the teepee is a massive chimney that forms the core of the teepee. As you continue through the living room, the dining room table was originally on the left side of the fireplace, balanced by the built-in seating on the right side. The bedroom wing held the studio, two children’s bedroom separated by a folding partition, the master bedroom and two bathrooms. See Additional Details...

Title: House & Home - September 1960 (Published monthly by Time Inc., New York)

Author: Anonymous

Description: "A Portfolio of Houses by Frank Lloyd Wright. On the next ten pages, the editors present four hitherto unpublished houses completed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the years before his death in April of 1959. This portfolio reflects most of the great ideas which Frank Lloyd Wright gave to residential architecture: the integration of house and landscape; the creation of free and flexible spaces by the use of modular plans and modern materials; and the animation of spaces by changes in light, in views, in levels, and in scale." Four homes include the Davis Residence, Marion, Indiana (1950 - S.324); the Palmer Residence, Ann Arbor, Michigan (1950 - S.332); the Hagan Residence, Uniontown, Penn. (1954 - S.377); and the Sander Residence, Stamford, Conn. Includes 21 photographs and illustrations. Original cover price $1.00. (Sweeney 1439) See Additional Details on the Davis Residence Essay...

Title: Indiana Preservation - March/April 2018 (Published Bi-Monthly by Indiana Landmarks, Indianapolis, Indiana)

Author: Anonymous

Description: Master Class. Is there a more famous American architect than Frank Lloyd Wright? His work, eventful life, and outsized personal ity have inspired architectural acolytes, documentaries, films, novels, and everything from furniture to finger puppets. Born in 1867 in Wisconsin, his career spanned seven decades, during which he produced 1,114 architectural designs, 532 of which were built.
It’s a famous pedigree that offers no guarantee of protection. In January, the owner demolished a Wright-designed medical clinic in Whitefish, Montana because preservation advocates couldn’t raise $1.7 million cash in time to buy it. A threatened home Wright designed for his son David in Phoenix, Arizona, found a preservation-minded rescuer who bought and donated it to the School of Architecture at Taliesin, a master’s pro gram that promotes Wright’s approach.
Seven Wright-designed houses remain in Indiana. Designed between 1906 and 1954, the homes illustrate the evolution of Wright’s design ideas...
The Seven Indiana Houses include the Christian, Armstrong, Davis, DeRhodes, Moe, Haynes and Mossberg. Includes nine photographs of Wright’s work.  (Digital Edition)

HOUSE & HOME - SEPTEMBER 1960

1) House & Home - September 1960 (Published monthly by Time Inc., New York)
"A Portfolio of Houses by Frank Lloyd Wright.
Pages 114-115: Davis Residence, Marion, Indiana, (1954 - S.324).
A “Pine Tree House” For Indiana. The tall, tapered roof over the living area of this house was one of Frank Lloyd Wright's favorite devices especially when it could be contrasted with a low-slung roof over an adjoining bedroom wing. He called this tent-like roof his "pine tree type," and this example is the last one he built.
There are good reasons for the unorthodox. funnel-shaped roof: First, the roof (topped with a skylight) serves to exhaust air from the living-dining-kitchen area. Second, the sharp contrast between the tall ceiling height over the living area and the low, intimate ceilings above the bedrooms produces a fascinating play of space that adds drama to the interior. Finally, the "pine tree" silhouette looks entirely at home in the middle of its forest setting.

2) Caption, Exterior at night: “Tall roof is hexagonal in plan, was framed with trusswork of 2x4s. Slot of glass around living area brings in light from unexpected angles.”

3) Caption, Living Room: “Hexagonal living area hugs the central fireplace. Low ceiling of bedroom wing is brought in around the periphery of the living room to create a lower scale in seating areas. Slot of glass between high and low roofs creates a ledge which serves as a lighting trough at night.”

4) Caption, Plan: “Diamond-shaped module determines plan of most rooms. Sides of the diamond-shape are 4' long, its interior angles are 60° and 120°. Wright used such nonrectangular modules to create more fluid and less boxlike spaces. In this house, the module was abandoned in the bedroom wing.

5) Caption, Exterior, Bedroom Wing: “Bedroom wing is built right into the hillside. Bottom layer of wall is made of concrete block, and extends from the footings to the window sill line. This masonry is waterproofed so exterior grade can be within a few inches of the sill. Above the sill is a band of glass topped by the sweeping roof with its deep overhangs.”

DAVIS RESIDENCE EXTERIOR (2023)

Dr. Richard & Madelyn Davis Residence and Wing, Woodside, Marion, Indiana, Exterior 2023 (FLLW #5037) (1950/1954 - S.324). On a trip through the Midwest, we had the opportunity to visit the Davis Residence. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1950. The “Teepee-Like” or Wigwam” concept for the Davis House was derived from the Lake Tahoe Summer Colony project designed in 1922. Wright utilized this concept in a number of designs.
The first was the Lake Tahoe Summer Colony project (1922) (FLLW #2205). It remained a project. In 1923, Frank Lloyd Wright utilized the Wigwam concept and designed the Nakoma Country Club in Madison Wisconsin (FLLW #2403). It too remained a project until 2001.
Wright would not visit the concept again for ten years. In 1939 he designed the Sidney Bazett House, Scheme 1 (FLLW #4032). Bazett would proceed with Scheme 2 in 1939 (FLLW #4032) (S.259). Also in 1939, Wright presented the design to E. A. Smith (FLLW #3811). Both the Sidney Bazett House, Scheme 1 and the E. A. Smith designs would remain projects.
In 1945, Wright designed a variation of the Wigwam for Arnold Friedman, Fir Tree (FLLW #4512) (S.286). In 1949, Wright designed the Thomas C. Lea House (FLLW #4910), a variation of the original Lake Tahoe Summer Colony project (1922). Where the Lake Tahoe consisted mostly of cottages and cabins, a bedroom wing was added to the Lea House. When Lea did not proceed with the project, slight modifications were made to the plans, and presented to Dr. Richard & Madelyn Davis. Although the Davis was the second “Wigwam” design to be built, the Davis is the closest to the original Lake Tahoe design. After 28 years, Wright’s Wigwam concept finally became a reality. In 1954, Davis approached Wright again to design a second bedroom wing.

The masonry walls are constructed of concrete blocks. Vertical joints are flush with the surface, horizontal joints are racked. The walls are designed is sets of three course. Every set is recessed 3/4" as it moves up the wall. The floors are Cherokee red concrete. From the street, a continual horizontal band of windows run between the masonry wall and the roof. A smaller row of clerestory windows circles the lower portion of the teepee’s roof.
The second bedroom wing, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1954, was completed after Wright’s death in 1960.
