Description: Perspective view of the Gerald M. Loeb Residence from below. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1944. In 1938, Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Ralph Jester home, but construction costs forced Jester to forgo building the home. Wright revived the design in 1944 for Gerald Loeb "Hilltop House." It too remained unbuilt. The design was utilized again for the Dr. Paul V. Palmer Residence (1947) in Phoenix, Arizona, but again, remained unbuilt. In 1955, Wright utilized design elements for the Duey & Julia Wright Residence, Scheme 1, Wausau, Wisconsin. Again, due to cost factors, it too remained unbuilt. Large circular columns supporting the roof, beginning at the carport, and in a long continuous line, to the entrance of the house, continuing around the perimeter of the living room, creating a pergola between the two. Off the corner of the of the living room was a large circular terrace. Text: "Country Home for Gerald M. Loeb. Tenaya East, Redding, Connecticut, Frank Lloyd Wright Architect." Lower left: "4511.12." Author: Hettinga, Mary Jane

Description: "The Duey and Julia Wright house, a 1958 Frank Lloyd Wright design, is located at 904 Grand Avenue, one mile south of Wausau's city center. Grand Avenue is also Business Highway 51, a busy four-lane highway, but the noise does not intrude into the house because of the mature trees and the placement of the house. The site is at the edge of a level lot of approximately 1 1/2 acres, overlooking, and 80 feet above, the Wisconsin River. The shape of the house and the dramatic placement makes this house an excellent example of Frank Lloyd Wright's genius..."

DUEY & JULIA WRIGHT ORIGINAL WORKSPACE DRAWING (1957)

Duey & Julia Wright Residence, Wausau, Wisconsin, Scheme 2, Original Ink, Graphite and Colored Pencil Workspace Drawing 1957 (1956 - S.420). Original hand-drawn and signed ink, graphite and colored pencil drawing of the Workspace floor plan and elevations for the Duey & Julia Wright Residence. Signed in pencil by Frank Lloyd Wright: "FLLW, July 57." Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1957. In 1955, Wright utilized design elements from the Gerald M. Loeb Residence for Scheme 1. Due to cost factors, it remained unbuilt. Scheme 2 turned the floor plan 90 degrees so that the circular living room projected out onto the hillside. The revised design was a modified L-shaped Usonian. Wright incorporated the circular living room with the rectangular bedroom wing. The Living space included the living room, dining area, workspace (kitchen) and library. The bedroom wing included four bedrooms and four baths. Because of the soil in the hillside, a full basement was added below the living room and library.
Frank Lloyd Wright added design elements representing musical notes. The floor plan is shaped like a quarter note.
The living room is circular in design. The workspace is semi-circular, but when you add the exterior planning area with the workspace, it too is circular. When you combine the two circles with the bedroom wing they form overlapping quarter notes.

1) Duey & Julia Wright Residence, Wausau, Wisconsin, Scheme 2, Plan 1957 (1956 - S.420) (FLLW #5831.04). Plot Plan for the Duey & Julia Wright Residence. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1957. The bedroom wing included four bedrooms and fourth baths. Because of the soil in the hillside, a full basement was added below the living room and library. Text: "House for Mr. And Mrs. Duey E. DUEY & JULIA WRIGHT RESIDENCE EXTERIOR & INTERIOR 2021

  EXTERIOR    INTERIOR

Duey & Julia Wright Residence, Wausau, Wisconsin 2021 (1956 - S.420). Set of 56 exterior and 55 interior photographs of the Duey Wright Residence. Photographed on September 22, 2021 during a road trip through Michigan and Wisconsin. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1956. The first design, Scheme 1, utilized some of the same design elements as the Gerald Loeb "Hilltop House." Large circular columns supporting the roof, beginning at the carport, and in a long continuous line, to the entrance of the house, continuing around the perimeter of the living room, creating a pergola between the two. Off the corner of the of the living room was a large circular terrace, also similar to the Loeb house. The house was perched atop the high bank of the Wisconsin River and ran parallel. In some respects the perspective of the Wright was more dramatic than the Loeb because of the massive retaining wall and "out-cropped" circular terrace. But the retaining wall proved to costly and Scheme 2 was presented.
Duey and Julia Wright, no relationship to the architect, owned a music store and music school in Wausau. Duey operated the music store, Julia the music school. According to her obituary, it was the largest in the state of Wisconsin. In 1958, Duey branched into radio when he purchased his first AM radio station.
Scheme 2 turned the floor plan 90 degrees so that the circular living room projected out onto the hillside. Frank Lloyd Wright also added design elements representing musical notes. The floor plan itself was shaped like a quarter note. The perforated light screens had a rhythmically abstract quality representing Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. The round window in the kitchen, a whole note. In many of his Usonian houses, Wright specified piano hinges for doors and cabinetry. They seem more appropriate in this house. Like other Usonian houses Scheme 2 was laid out in a grid or module system. The Duey Wright was four feet.
The revised design, Scheme 2, was a modified L-shaped Usonian. Wright incorporated the circular living room with the rectangular bedroom wing. Wright first used a circular design in the Jacob’s second house in 1942 which he called the "Solar Hemicycle." The Living space included the living room, dining area, workspace (kitchen) and library. The bedroom wing included four bedrooms and fourth baths. Because of the soil in the hillside, a full basement was added below the living room and library.

The house was constructed of concrete blocks, wood, plaster, glass, and finished in Philippine mahogany. The decorative fascia was indented with an elongated triangle, then trimmed with an elongated diamond that dropped below the fascia, repeated every four feet, in sync with the four foot grid system. The concrete blocks were standard unadorned blocks. Grout was racked on the horizontal joints, flush on the vertical joints, adding to the low horizontal look.
The Living Room included both built-in as-well-as free-standing furniture. Frank Lloyd Wright designed all the furniture in the home. Fabric was by Schumacher, from the line Frank Lloyd Wright designed in 1955. The wallpaper in the bathrooms, was also part of the Schumacher line designed by Wright. The circular built-in seating in the living room is 30 feet in length. The Living room and library both have a fireplace. A third is in the basement. As the story is told, when Duey and Julie moved into the house, they brought only their clothes with them. The kitchen included a built-in blender.

Grandchildren to Duey and Julia, Michael and Mary Kay Wright (brother and sister) are the present owners of the house which has been in the family for three generations. In 1998, the Duey Wright House was restored and became the executive offices for their families business, Midwest Communications, founded by Duey Wright in 1958, which owns and operates over 80 radio stations in the Midwest. His first acquisition was an AM radio station with the call letters WRIG, for Wright.
Michael Wright had a strong admiration for the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. During the restoration and rehabilitated of the house in 1998, he was adamant that it retained Wright’s original intent and design and that no structural or architectural changes be made. In 1998, the Duey E. Wright House was also added to the National Register of Historic Places. As you enter the offices today, over twenty years later, it has more of the feel of a home than an office. Well done Michael.
