In his autobiography, Wright wrote: "With Silsbee, I had gained considerable light on the practical needs of the American dwelling. Adler and Sullivan refused to build residences during all the time I was with them. The few that were imperative, owing to social obligations to important clients, fell to my lot out of office hours. They would, of course, check up on them in good time. Sullivan’s own home on Lake Avenue (now demolished) was one of these, as were his southern house at Ocean Springs and the house next door for the Charnleys. The city house on Astor Street for the Charnleys, like the others, I did at home evenings and Sundays in the nice studio draughting room upstairs at the front of the little Forest Avenue home... In this Charnley city-house on Astor Street I first sensed the definitely decorative value of the plain surface, that is to say, of the flat plane as such. The drawings for the Charnley house were all traced and printed in the Adler and Sullivan offices, but by preparing them for this purpose at home I helped pay my pressing building debts with ‘overtime.’ An Autobiography, Wright, 1932, p.100-101. The Louis Sullivan Bungalow (1890 - S.005) and the Charnley Bungalow were closely tied. So close in fact they were next to each other. According to Mary Crocker who reviewed taxrecords, Charnley purchased fifteen acres and Sullivan purchased six acres in March, 1890. Historic Architecture in Mississippi, Crocker, 1973/1982, p.98. Charnley then acquired five more acres and deeded them to Sullivan for $1, on the condition that he provide plans for a house, Louis Sullivan As He Lived, Connely, 1960, p.125.
Sullivan's trip to Ocean Springs in 1890 was his first vacation in fifteen years. As Sullivan's right hand man, Frank Lloyd Wright handled many of the residential commissions. The Sullivan and Charnley bungalows are similar "T-Plans"Â with minor variations. Wright also designed additional buildings on the property for both. Stable and Servant's Quarters for Sullivan, and a Guesthouse and Stables for Charnley.
In 2005, Hurricane Katrina utterly demolished the Sullivan Bungalow. None of the original buildings remain. Katrina was also devastating to the Charnley buildings, moving the Bungalow off its foundation. But both the Charnley Bungalow and Guesthouse were restored.
Originally the Guesthouse was a two-room octagonal building. Over the past 130-plus years, it has been added onto, and added onto many times. The original two rooms were reduced in size, and the space converted to a covered front porch.
A dispute between Sullivan and Wright grew out of Wright's acceptance of independent commissions, and in 1893 Sullivan fired Wright. Wright then began his own firm.

Description: Original decorative wood frieze panel from the James Charnley Residence. Designed in 1891 by Frank Lloyd Wright. James Charnley was a wealthy lumberman who was a personal friend of Louis Sullivan. Frank Lloyd Wright was the chief draftsman at the time for the architectural firm of Adler and Sullivan.
This panel was originally located beneath the inset balcony on the second level of the front facade. There are eight columns supporting the roof of the projecting portion of the balcony. Beneath each column under the balcony are eight decorative “supports”. This piece is one of eight end caps. This design appears on the ends and three sides as-well-as the back space between the supports. A similar design is on the front facade of the balcony and is repeated seven times. In 1986 the Charnley Residence was purchased by the architectural firm of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill and subsequently went through an extensive renovation. This piece was removed during the renovation.

James Charnley Residence 2018 (1891 - S.009). Set of 127 images of the James Charnley Residence in Chicago, Illinois. Designed in 1891 by Frank Lloyd Wright. After arriving in Chicago, Frank Lloyd Wright was hired as a draftsman with Joseph Lyman Silsbee who he had collaborated with on Unity Chapel (1886 - S.000) in Spring Green. His employment with Silsbee was short lived after accepting employment in 1887 as a draftsman for Adler and Sullivan, working closely with Sullivan for six years.
In his autobiography, Wright wrote: "With Silsbee, I had gained considerable light on the practical needs of the American dwelling. Adler and Sullivan refused to build residences during all the time I was with them. The few that were imperative, owing to social obligations to important clients, fell to my lot out of office hours. They would, of course, check up on them in good time. Sullivan's own home on Lake Avenue (now demolished) was one of these, as were his southern house at Ocean Springs and the house next door for the Charnleys. The city house on Astor Street for the Charnleys, like the others, I did at home evenings and Sundays in the nice studio draughting room upstairs at the front of the little Forest Avenue home... In this Charnley city-house on Astor Street I first sensed the definitely decorative value of the plain surface, that is to say, of the flat plane as such. The drawings for the Charnleyhouse were all traced and printed in the Adler and Sullivan offices, but by preparing them for this purpose at home I helped pay my pressing building debts with "overtime." Grant Carpenter Manson wrote: "There was no duplicate of the Charnley house anywhere in the world in 1891. It was a spontaneous performance, the result of a radical, independent architectural vision, an unfettered mind which, as Hitchcock (the architectural historian Henry-Russell Hitchcock) said, had nothing "to unlearn." Finis Farr wrote: "Nothing exactly like this had been seen before, it was serene, self-contained, and more than a little cold. In comparison with this chilly reticence, houses in traditional style were likely to seem overstated unless they were very good indeed." Frank Lloyd Wright, Farr, 1961.
A dispute grew out of his acceptance of independent commissions, and in 1893 Sullivan fired Wright. Wright then began his own firm. Photographed during a visit to Chicago by Douglas M.
