Title:  Kentuck Knob, Frank Lloyd Wright's House for I.N. and Bernardine Hagan (Hard Cover DJ) (Published by The Local History Company, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania)

Author: Hagan, Bernardine

Description: Dust jacket: Bernardine and I.N. Hagan embarked on the adventure of a lifetime in the early 1950s when they engaged Frank Lloyd Wright to design and build their house on a mountaintop in southwestern Pennsylvania. The Hagans were natives of the area and wanted a permanent residence, not a weekend retreat. While Wright provided a great house, it was the Hagans who made it a home. This is their  journey, not just of design and construction, but also of a full life lived for over thirty years on one of the most spectacular sites in the country for a Frank Lloyd Wright house and quite possibly Wright's warmest residence.
Kentuck Knob has been relatively unknown to the general public, even though it is located within a few miles of Fallingwater, the most famous and important house in America, and also designed by Wright. Still in private hands (although no longer in the Hagan family), Kentuck Knob is now open to the public and its fame is spreading rapidly. People who visit both houses are awed by Fallingwater, but want to live at Kentuck Knob.

Description: "The mountains of Western Pennsylvania are twice enriched by the genius of America's greatest architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. Located just a few miles southwest of Wright's masterpiece, Fallingwater, and high atop a bluff overlooking the Youghiogheny River gorge stands Kentuck knob, an eloquent testimony to the unity of man and nature.
Knob was designed by Wright in 1954 for I. N. Hagan, owner of the Hagan Ice Cream Company, and his artist wife, Bernardine. The Uniontown couple commission Wright to design the house for their 89 acre track the farmland in the Kentuck district of Steward Township, Fayette County..." (First Edition)

I. N. HAGAN RESIDENCE, KENTUCK KNOB EXTERIOR (2021)

I. N. Hagan Residence, Kentuck Knob, Chalkhill, Pennsylvania, 2021 (1954 - S.377). Set of 86 images of the Hagan Residence, Kentuck Knob, photographed on October 14, 2021. On a trip to visit Fallingwater, we took the opportunity to visit and photograph the Hagan Residence, Kentuck Knob, approximately 12 minutes from Fallingwater. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1954. October 14 was a beautiful, sunny fall day with just a slight overcast, perfect for capturing the Kentuck Knob.
Kentuck Knob, stands as a distinguished example of Frank Lloyd Wright's pioneering architectural design. Nestled in the serene landscape of Stewart Township, Pennsylvania, this 1954 masterpiece harmoniously integrates with its natural surroundings, embodying Wright's principles of organic architecture. The residence exemplifies the Usonian style, characterized by its modest scale, environmental integration, and utilization of local materials. Kentuck Knob is celebrated as a quintessential representation of mid-20th-century modern architecture.
“The presentation drawings, especially the plan and elevation, show a considerably smaller house than the one that was actually built. This is not usually the case; more frequently the working drawings are a more conservative rendition of the original idea in order to bring construction costs into the budget as outlined by the client.
But the Hagan house, on its hill crown overlooking hundreds of acres of beautiful Pennsylvania forests - not far from Fallingwater - grew to be an especially elegant work, most particularly in its fine stone masonry and beautiful carpentry. The plan wraps around a gravel entry court, with carport at one end, entrance in the center, living room at the other end. The tall masonry-enclosed workspace is part, as usual, of the living room fireplace mass. Both dining
and living rooms give onto a stone terrace that commands the view of the surrounding land-scape. The working drawing elevations clearly reveal the great amount of stonework employed in this dwelling, with a gentle hipped roof that lends a sense of serene shelter above the drama of the stone masonry.” Frank Lloyd Wright Monograph 1951-1959, Pfeiffer, 1988.
The floor is paved with flagstone, the walls are crafted from sandstone in the style of Wright's Taliesin. The woodwork throughout the space showcases exceptionally fine craftsmanship, particularly evident in the trellis that runs alongside the living room and dining area. The interior partitions are constructed using a board and batten technique. The roof features a hip design sheathed in copper.
Unfortunately, we were unable to photograph the interior of Kentuck Knob, which serves as a museum showcasing an impressive collection of Frank Lloyd Wright artifacts. This collection features original Wright-designed chairs, furniture, drawings, art glass, and Minic Heritage Henredon prototypes.
Frank Lloyd Wright designed a second building for I. N. Hagan in 1954. The I. N. Hagan Ice Cream Building (FLLW#5429). A three story building in downtown Uniontown, Pennsylvania. It was never built, and remained a project.
We have assembled a set of 86 images of the Hagan Residence, Kentuck Knob, photographed by Douglas M. Steiner on October 14, 2021. These photographs aim to capture and preserve a moment in time, documenting the intricate details that contribute to the overall design and reflecting the current condition of the home. To expedite their addition to our website, we have chosen to omit individual descriptions for each image. Original 23 X 15 high res digital images. (ST#2021.53 : 1-86)
