Title: 1) Isabel & Darwin Martin Residence Graycliff, Derby, New York, Interior Circa 1930 (1927 - S.225-226).

Description: Interior view of Graycliff living room with stick-and-reed armchairs, a Wright designed hexagon table and possibly the plant stand. The fireplace is in the background along the Northeast end. There were four hexagon tables visible during our tour. One in the library and three in the living room. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1927 for Isabelle Martin, the wife of Darwin Martin. Graycliff was the second completed complex designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the Martin’s. The first being the Martin House Complex in Buffalo which included the Darwin Martin Residence (1904), the Barton Residence (1903), and the Gardener’s Cottage (1905).
Darwin Martin communicated to Frank Lloyd Wright that this summer home was to bless his wife, Isabel Martin. He wrote to Wright on May 5, 1926, “Your client is Mrs. Martin... If a house is built, it is only for her pleasure and we must make it a joy to her of the very planning and building..." On April 21, 1926, Marting wrote to Wright again to "reduce the job to the barest simplicity... the great desideration in floods of light and sunshine... and the appearance of growth of the house from the soil!"
Although Wright designed all the furniture and art glass for the Martin Residence in Buffalo, it was not as extensive for Graycliff. Wright designed both freestanding and built-in furniture for the house interior and also suggested colors, fabrics and approved of the use of wicker furniture. The molding and Wright-designed furniture in the house are made of solid cypress and cypress veneer. Courtesy of the University at Buffalo Libraries. See Additional Information...

Title: Preserving Graycliff: An Examination of the Colors, Fabrics and Furniture of the Frank Lloyd Wright Designed Summer Residence of Isabelle Martin (Digital) (Published by WAG Postprints, Dallas, Texas)

Author: Kirschner, Pamela

Description: Information was gathered in a study of the interior color scheme, fabrics and furniture of the Frank Lloyd Wright designed house Graycliff. The house is situated on a cliff overlooking Lake Erie in Derby, New York. It was designed by Wright in 1926 for Isabelle Martin, the wife of the industrialist Darwin Martin. Wright designed both freestanding and built-in furniture for the house interior and also suggested colors and fabrics... Graycliff was the summer estate of Isabelle R. and Darwin D. Martin and is located on the cliffs above Lake Erie in Derby, New York, fourteen miles south of Buffalo. The house received its name from the gray shale cliffs it overlooks. Darwin Martin provided Wright with many commissions, including a residence for Martin and his wife and family built in 1906 in Buffalo, New York. Martin requested that their summer house be designed for his wife Isabelle. Isabelle's feeling was that their Buffalo home was too dark and requested that the summer home be filled with "floods of light and sunshine."

Title: Isabel & Darwin Martin Summer Residence Graycliff, Derby, New York, Settle (Bench) 1929/2022 (1927 - S.225).

Description: Entry hall Settle (bench) originally produced in 1929 for the Isabel & Darwin Martin Summer Residence Graycliff. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1929. According to Graycliff, “In a letter to Frank Lloyd Wright dated August 1, 1929, Isabelle Martin wrote: "Will you please send me at once a sketch for a hall seat about 6 ft. long and 23 in. deep over all. This I wish of the simplest possible design to be made of cypress with loose cushions back and seat. Comfort is not first requisite as it is simply to fill space between lavatory door and south window... One stroke of your pencil will do the job..." During a visit to Graycliff in 2024, this original bench was featured in the living room. A reproduction sets in the entryway just to the right of the front door (ST#2024.21-2).
After Isabel Martin’s death in 1945, Graycliff remained unsold until 1951 when the Piarist Fathers acquired the property. In 1996 this Settle was acquired and held in a private collection. On June 16, 2010 this Settle was sold at Christie's, New York. On December 13, 2022, this bench was sold at Toomey & Co. The result was $20,000. Sheet 23: View of Richard Bock's sculpture "Awakening of Spring." Text: "Awakening of Spring. Jewett Parkway. Richard W. Bock." Originally conceived around 1906-1907, Richard Bock was commissioned by Frank Lloyd Wright to create the four seasons: Spring, Winter, Summer and Fall. Spring was created and installed on one of the lower pedestals on the exterior of the Darwin S. Martin Residence on Jewett Parkway and Summer Avenue in Buffalo New York. According to the Bock Museum at Greenville University, Greenville, Illinois, "Winter" was begun, but put on hold by Mrs. Martin. Included in the Martin Photographic Collection at The University of Buffalo Library, Martin's daughter was photographed in her wedding dress next to the original sculpture in 1923. In the 1940s it was moved to Martins son's home on Summer Street until the 1970s when they donated it to the Bock Museum where it sits today on a pedestal in front of the museum. During the restoration of the Darwin Martin complex, a request was made to the Museum to return the Sculpture to its original pedestal. After the request was denied, the Martin Complex had a reproduction created, and it was unveiled on June 8, 2009, Frank Lloyd Wright's 142nd birthday. It appears in this photograph that the 2 foot by 5 foot sculpture is setting on wooden sawhorses. (S#198.26 -23)

MARTIN SUMMER RESIDENCE GRAYCLIFF (1940)

The entrance is beneath the porte cochere. The sun room and exterior garden is on the far left.

MARTIN'S GRAYCLIFF: INTERIOR & EXTERIOR (2024)

  EXTERIOR    INTERIOR

Isabel & Darwin Martin Residence Graycliff and Garage, Derby, New York, 2024 (1927 - S.225-226). Set of 41 exterior and 45 interior images of the Martin Residence Graycliff, photographed on October 9, 2024. On a trip to Buffalo, we had the opportunity to visit and photograph the Martin Complex, and Graycliff, the summer home of Isabel & Darwin Martin in Derby, approximately 30 minutes away. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1927. Graycliff was the second completed complex designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the Martin’s. The first being the Martin House Complex in Buffalo which included the Darwin Martin Residence (1904), the Barton Residence (1903), and the Gardener’s Cottage (1905).
Darwin Martin wanted to communicate to Frank Lloyd Wright that this summer home was to bless his wife, Isabel Martin.
Graycliff is constructed of stucco, stone and glass, and built a mere 70 feet from the gray cliffs that set on the edge of Lake Erie, giving the house sweeping views of the lake.
Henry-Russel Hitchcock wrote, “The house for Darwin D. Martin at Derby, N. Y., begun in 1927 but designed a year or two earlier, has somewhat the same vocabulary as Taliesin. But as it was unsupervised it is not one of Wright's really satisfactory houses. Since its construction, the growth of the planting, doubtless laid out by Mrs. Martin, who had known Wright's work for more than twenty years, has enormously improved it.” In The Nature of Materials, 1942, p.79.
Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer wrote: “The Lake Erie house is set close to the lake, the living room siding on a flat terrace parterre with a spacious lawn going down to the water's edge. The "grammar" of the building is much like that of Taliesin III, which was rebuilt not long before this commission came to Mr. Wright... Mr. Wright was away from New York while this particular opus was in construction. Unsupervised, it suffered in the execution of
those details so essential to the very nature of good building.” Frank Lloyd Wright, Monograph 1924-1936, 1985, p.75.
Thomas Heinz wrote, “This was to be the summer house of the Darwin Martin family though it was Isabelle Reidpath Martin who was the force behind this work. She listed the requirements for the design and Wright, who had little other work at the time, was only too happy to accommodate her wishes. The Tishner stone, heavy in iron ore, bleeds and oxidizes and has many inclusions of fossil. It is of local origin and is well matched to the colors of the stucco and the interior. The stone was handled in a manner typical of the area but in locations and proportions that enhanced it.” Frank Lloyd Wright Field Guide, 2005, p.398.
In 2010, Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer described Graycliff, “The plan is long, with the living room in the center, a library at one end, and a dining alcove behind the fireplace at the other. Glass doors open on both sides of the living room to a terrace on the entrance side and an esplanade directed toward Lake Erie on the other. The entry projects out at one end of the living room and accesses a lavatory and sunroom. At the other end, beyond the dining alcove, are the kitchen and another sun porch. On the second level the stairway up from the entry gains a long gallery on the entrance side of the house, which has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a sleeping porch. The bedrooms face the lake. At the far end, over the kitchen, are two maid's rooms and bathroom with a separate staircase leading down to the kitchen.” Frank Lloyd Wright, 1917-1942, 2010, P.156.
October 9, 2024 was a beautiful sunny fall day, with spectacular views of Lake Erie. The Graycliff Conservancy has painstakingly restored the Martin‘s Graycliff. Set of 41 exterior and 45 interior images of the Martin Residence Graycliff, photographed by Douglas M. Steiner on October 9, 2024. Still photography captures a moment in time and preserves it. Our intent is to record the details that create the totality of the design, creating a complete picture, as-well-as the present condition of the home. In an effort to expedite adding these photographs to this website, we have dispensed with a description for each photograph. Original 23 X 15 high res digital images. Isabel & Darwin Martin Residence Graycliff, Derby, New York, Interior Circa 1930 (1927 - S.225-226). Interior view of Graycliff library with a Frank Lloyd Wright designed table, setting against the South wall. There were four of these tables visible during our tour. One in the same place as this picture, one in the entrance hall, one in the sun room and one in the dining room. (S#0249.76.0925)

Isabel & Darwin Martin Residence Graycliff, Derby, New York, Furniture (1927 - S.225-226). Frank Lloyd Wright designed many projects for Darwin Martin. Besides the Larkin Building, Wright designed the Martin House Complex in Buffalo which included the Darwin Martin Residence (1904), the Barton Residence (1903), and the Gardener’s Cottage (1905). In 1927, wright designed a summer house for th3e Martins, Graycliff, in Derby, approximately 30 from Buffalo.
We were unable to find original drawings of wright designed furniture either in the Frank Lloyd Wright Archives at the Avery Library, Columbia University or the University of Buffalo Darwin Martin Collection. Pamela Kirchner wrote: In an interview with Dorothy Martin taken in 1973 she stated, “I can tell you that Nelson Montgomery made the furniture for the country house.” Mr. Montgomery was also interviewed in 1971 and stated that, “Mr. Wright would draw things on shingles and give it to me to make and I threw away about 25 of those shingles.” The remaining pieces of Wright ’s furniture at the house include one rectangular table, a hexagon-shaped table with two lower shelves, a radiator cover
and two built-in cabinets. Preserving Graycliff, 2001.
Entry Way Settle (Bench). Isabel & Darwin Martin Summer Residence Graycliff, Derby, New York, Entry Hall Settle (Bench) 1929/2022 (1927 - S.225). Entry hall settle from the Isabel & Darwin Martin Summer Residence Graycliff. One stroke of your pencil will do the job..." During a visit to Graycliff in 2024, this original
bench was featured in the living room.

Living Room Table. These tables were present in early photographs of Graycliff. We were able to locate these tables in approximately 11 photographs in the University of Buffalo, Darwin Martin Collection. Pamela Kirchner indicated these tables were constructed of Cypress, veneer and plywood core and measure 52" Wide x 28" Deep x 24 Deep. Preserving Graycliff, 2001.
In 2024, four of these tables were visible during our tour. One in the entrance hall (#2024.21-1), one in the library (#2024.21-12), one in the sun room (#2024.21-15) and one in the dining room (#2024.21-23B).
Hexagon Tables. These tables were present in early photographs of Graycliff. We were able to locate hexagon tables in approximately six photographs in the University of Buffalo, Darwin Martin Collection. Pamela Kirchner indicated that there were two of these tables that survived. One appeared to be an original and one appears to be a reproduction, made of different material. There are six sides and six legs. There is a middle and lower shelf, different sizes. They measure 22" Wide and Deep x 24 High. Preserving Graycliff, 2001.
In 2024, there were four hexagon tables visible during our tour. One in the library (#2024.21-9), and three in the living room (#2024.21-19), (#2024.21-26), (#2024.21-27).
