Date: 1944

Title: Herbert and Katherine Jacobs Residence II, Middleton, Wisconsin, Ground and Mezanine Floor Plans 1944 (1944 - S.283).

Description: Two original diazo prints of the ground and second floors for the Herbert and Katherine Jacobs Residence II. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1944. It is the second home that Frank Lloyd Wright designed for the Jacobs. The first, Jacobs I (S#234), was the first Usonian home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and was designed in 1936.
The Jacobs II is a two-story house. The house is approached from the back, then through a tunnel to the front of the house. The front of the house has floor to ceiling windows, the back is set into an earthen bank.
On the mezanine (second) level, five bedrooms run along the back of the house. All open onto a balcony that overlooks the living room. The second floor is hung from the roof rafters, freeing the living room from any visible supports. There is a large circular mass at the back of the house. It contains the stairs, a utility room on the first floor, and a bath on the second level. A fireplace makes up a smaller semi-circular mass. The living room, dining area and workspace take up the ground floor. A circular pool in the living room is half indoors and half outdoors. With windows running across the middle. A built-in planter is on either end of the house.
       1) Ground floor plan text: "Solar Hemicycle. House For Mr. & Mrs. Herbert Jacobs, Middleton, Wisconsin. Frank Lloyd Wright Architect. Sheet 2. (Elevations) Ground Floor Plan."
       2) Second floor plan: "House For Mr. & Mrs. Herbert Jacobs, Solar Hemicycle. Frank Lloyd Wright Architect. Sheet 4. Mezanine Floor Plan."

Title: Herbert & Katherine Jacobs II Residence, Middleton, Wisc 1967 (1944 - S.283).

Description: View of the Jacobs II Residence from the Southwest. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1944. Text accompanying the photograph: "Eleven years after he built the modest home for Herbert Jacobs, Wright designed a second house for the newsman. They are invariably called Jacobs I and Jacobs II. Jacobs II, now onwed by William Taylor, is vastly different from the earlier house. On a hill near Middleton, it is in the form of a semicircle. The lower floor is one big room, 17 feet wide and 100 feet along the curve of the back wall. Wright called it a "solar house" and during the winter the 48 foot long concave window wall lets the sun heat the living room and bedrooms hung over it. Summers, the roof projection keeps the house cool." Also: "The Milwaukee Journal, Sunday, December 10, 1967." Hand written on verso: "(Frank Lloyd Wright - Homes Designed by Him." Title: We Chose the Country (Soft Cover) (Published by Roger H. Hunt, Madison, Wisconsin)

Author: Jacobs, Herbert

Description: First published in 1948 by Harper and Row, Inc. Kirkus Book review: "A family piece, extolling the freedom, simplicity and healthfulness of country life as opposed to the restrictions and conventions of city life. The Jacobs family, Herbert and Katherine-and their children, Susan, Elizabeth and Bill, decide to leave their beautiful and comfortable Frank Lloyd Wright house in Madison, Wisconsin, and move to an old run-down farm (but it has a wonderful view) about nine miles outside of Madison. Not knowing much about farming, they run into a great many difficulties, but they learn gradually, and cheerfully embark on extensive milk producing and chicken, pig and sheep raising ventures. After living there for five years, they are finally able to build another house designed by Wright which makes the most of their view..." Preface: "We Chose the Country ends with an account of starting a new Wright house. It got built, but it took two and a half years before we could move into its root cellar and help carpenters and masons finish it. Named "Solar Hemicycle" by Wright, it too, became famous, and later served as prototype of much current solar construction..."  (Second Edition)
