Tour of Taliesin III, Frank Lloyd Wright's Personal Residence at the Taliesin, Spring Green Complex. On a trip from Chicago to Seattle with my son-in-law, we stopped to tour Taliesin. The Taliesin Complex cover 600 acres. Wright built Taliesin I in 1911 and it continually evolved until his death in 1959. After a fire destroyed the residential wing in 1914, he rebuilt, Taliesin II. After fire struck again in 1925, he built again, Taliesin III.

Taliesin is a treasure trove, a gem, a Petri dish of Wright ideas, a museum. Details is what we attempted to record. Details that are easy to overlook in the expansive picture of Taliesin. Hidden in plain view, tucked in the back of a shelf is an original 1894 weed holder. There are examples of the many chairs he designed. Chinese artwork. Japanese prints. Flowers in the Crannied Wall, Priceless artifacts. Minic prototype accessories. Nakoma and Nakomis. Dana wall sconce. Heath art glass... To many to take in in just a few short hours.

The tour began at the Visitor’s Center at the Riverside Terrace Restaurant. From there, we started on the grassy knoll between Wright’s private residence and the Hill Apartments. A single tour barely scratches the surface, leaving you parched for more. Set of 174 high res 20 X 13.5 digital images. Taliesin III, Spring Green.

Title: Taliesin III, Spring Green, (1925- S.218).

Description: 5) Off of County Road C, near the old Taliesin Dam, this entrance gate was constructed by local stone masons 1911-1912. Wright wrote, "Country masons laid all the stone with the quarry for a pattern and the architect for teacher. They learned to lay the walls in the long, thin, flat ledges natural to it, natural edges out. As often as they laid a stone they would stand back to judge the effect. They were soon as interested as sculptures fashioning a statue..." "An Autobiography" Wright, 1932, p.174. Photographed June 10, 2016.

Description: 56) Frank Lloyd Wright’s Studio. Louis Sullivan designed plaster frieze fragment from the Garrick Theater in Chicago, Illinois. In 1888 Frank Lloyd Wright took a job as a draftsman for Adler and Sullivan. By 1890, Wright had an office next to Sullivan and was head draftsman. Originally called the Schiller Theater Building, it opened in 1891. It would make sense that Wright would have this fragment in his office, seeing that he was Louis Sullivan’s right hand man. In 1893 Wright set up his own practice. Despite efforts to save the theater it was eventually demolished in 1960. Photographed June 10, 2016.

Description: 60) Frank Lloyd Wright’s Studio. Wright designed vase or weed holder. In 1955, Frank Lloyd Wright developed the "Taliesin Ensemble", a line of furnishings for those that did not live in one of his homes. Partnerships were formed with five companies: 1) Heritage-Henredon, a line of furniture designed by Wright. 2) Karastan, Rugs. 3) The Martin-Senour Company, the Taliesin Palette, 36 personally selected paint colors. 4) Minic, Accessories. 5) F. Schumacher & Co., Fabrics & Wallpaper designed by Wright. Minic produced a number of prototype accessories, this vase or weed holder as-well-as a number of other prototypes found at Taliesin. We have been able to verify: 1) this vase; 2) A tall square vase; 3) Double-square vase with the Heritage-Henredon pattern on the base; 4) A short rectangular shaped plant holder. Minic Manufacturing was asked to produce the accessories as-well-as a line of furniture. When they declines to produce the furniture, Heritage-Henredon was approached and produced the line of furniture. The line of accessories was never put into production. Photographed June 10, 2016.

There are two at Taliesin, one is at Taliesin West, one is at the Dallas Public Library, one at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library in Austin, Texas, and one in the Zimmerman House which is a variation of the "design matured with a more structurally sound construction than its predecessors." 96) Living Room. Dining Room Chair. A number of these chairs can be seen around Taliesin. Frank Lloyd Wright’s first use of this design was in 1925 for Taliesin in Spring Green, Wisconsin, (Decorative Designs, Hanks, 1979 p. 142). In 1948 the design became a part of the Herman T. Mossberg Residence (1948 - S.302), (Furniture, Heinz, 1993, p. 60-61). They were also included in the Jacobs 1 Residence (possibly mid 1980s) (1936 - S.234) (Interior Style, Ehrlich, 2003, p. 47, 132-3). An image in "Historic Preservation", July-Sept, 1976, p. 10 does not show these chairs, nor does "Building with Frank Lloyd Wright", Jacobs, 1978. A slight variation was designed for the Palmer Residence (1950 - S.332) (Wright Style, Lind, 1992, p. 149-150). Photographed June 10, 2016. See additional Wright designed chairs.
