ROBERT LLEWELLYN WRIGHT HOUSE (1953 - S.358)
Robert Llewellyn Wright (November 5, 1903 - February 22, 1986, Bethesda, Maryland) Llewellyn graduated from law school, and established a practice in Chicago, where he met and married Elizabeth Bryant Kehler (July 21, 1910 - November 17, 2005) in 1933. They moved to Washington, D.C., where he continued his legal career, including a job at the U.S. Department of Justice. They had two sons, Thomas Llewellyn (1935), Timothy Kehler (1938), and one daughter, Elizabeth Catherine (1943). His father designed a home for him in 1953, construction began in 1957 and was completed in 1958. The plans and working drawings were completed by John Howe and Curtis Besinger. Apprentice Robert Beharka supervised the construction. The home is two-stories, three bedroom, 1,800 square feet concrete block structure. The house is composed of intersection and concentric segments of a circle, or "hemicycles" as Wright called it. The lower level included the Living, Dining, Workspace (Kitchen), Powder Room and the Terrace with Pool. The upper level includes three Bedrooms, full Bath, Gallery (Hall) and a Balcony off the Master Bedroom. Construction was delayed for a few years. Wright had told his son to find a lot that builders wouldn’t touch. He found just that. An unbuildable lot in Bethesda, Maryland. The grounds were landscaped by his brother Lloyd Wright in 1960. A "hemicycles" shaped coffee table and six foot stools, designed by Wright, mimicking the shape of the home were added later, as was an adaptation of the "March Balloons" design for the Living Room carpet. According to Pfeiffer, on a visit to Taliesin West shortly before his death, he said, "The best thing I ever did in my life was to build that house that Dad designed for me", Monograph 8. Llewellyn lived in the home for nearly 26 years until his death, Elizabeth, who lived to be 95, 47 years. Thomas Llewellyn Wright continued living in the home after his father’s death. Title: Baltimore Sun Magazine - Nov 2, 1958 (Copy of article.)
Author: Stevens, Larry
Description: Copy of the two page article published in the Baltimore Sun Magazine. "The Wright house for the Wright family. One of Maryland’s most striking homes is certainly that of Robert L. Wright, a Bethesda lawyer. For it was designed for him by his father, Frank Lloyd Wright, and it embodies this famous architect’s tenet that a building should be at one and the same time functional, comfortable and organically blended with its surroundings. Situated on the slope of a ravine overlooking a creek, the Wright house is a combination of almond-shaped living areas. In front, with a view of woodland, it presents a gracefully sweeping curve of interlocking concrete blocks, glass and Philippine mahogany, with a prowl like balcony jetting out..."
Caption page 12, left: "The house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for his son, Robert L. Wright, at Bethesda, Md., melts into its woodland setting. About three fourths of the side pictured above consists of glass. The cantilevered balcony in the view below projects off the master bedroom; the ground-level door leads to a utility room."
Caption page 12, right: "The noted architect and his wife, visiting their son, survey the house, which is of concrete block."
Caption page 13, top left: "The living area faces southeast. The floor is red concrete mat and is kept highly polished. Ceiling is rough, sand-finished plaster. Both inner and outer walls curve."
Caption page 13, top right: "The fireplace projects and has a high hood, making beauty of flames visible all over the living area."
Caption page 13, center right: "Mrs. Robert L. Wright in a bedroom. Walls are standard concrete block – unpainted, as everywhere else."
Caption page 13, bottom left: "The semi-circular work space in the kitchen repeats the flowing curves of the exterior."
Caption page 13, bottom center: "The big dressing table in Betsy Wright's bedroom is built in and also serves her as desk."
Caption page 13, bottom right: "The windows in an upstairs passage create an interesting pattern both day and night."

Robert Llewellyn Wright Residence, Bethesda, Maryland, Exterior 2020. Set of 71 photographs of the exterior of the Robert Llewellyn Wright Residence. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for his son in 1953. The home is a two-story, three bedroom, 1,800 square foot concrete block structure. The house is composed of intersection and concentric segments of a circle, or "hemicycles" as Wright called it. The first "hemicycle" home Frank Lloyd Wright designed was the Jacobs II (1944). He also designed the Meyer (1948), Laurent (1949), Pearce (1950), Marden (1952), (Llewellyn Wright - 1953), Lewis (1952), Cooke (1953), Rayward (1955) and the Spencer (1956). Circular homes included the Friedman (1948), David Wright (1950) and the Lykes (1959). The first "hemicycle" home Frank Lloyd Wright designed was the Jacobs II (1944).
The lower level included the Living, Dining, Workspace (Kitchen), Powder Room and the Terrace with Pool. The upper level includes three Bedrooms, full Bath, Gallery (Hall) and aBalcony off the Master Bedroom. Construction was delayed for a few years. Wright had told his son to find a lot that builders wouldn’t touch. He found just that. An unbuildable lot in Bethesda, Maryland. The grounds were landscaped by his brother Lloyd Wright in 1960. According to Pfeiffer, on a visit to Taliesin West shortly before his death, Llewellyn said, "The best thing I ever did in my life was to build that house that Dad designed for me", Monograph 8. Robert Llewellyn was Wright’s sixth child. Llewellyn lived in the home for nearly 26 years until his death, Elizabeth, who lived to be 95, lived in the home for 47 years. Thomas Llewellyn Wright continued living in the home after his father’s death.

Hanging on the wall were three drawings by Frank Lloyd Wright. Two were of an unpublished Usonian design from 1945. He wrote, "Dear Llewellyn - Betty - et al. How's this? Dad." The illustration is dated "1945. The third illustration was "Scheme 1" for the house that was built in Bethesda,
The Llewellyn Wright house is a two-story, three bedroom, 1,800 square foot concrete block structure.
A "hemicycles" shaped coffee table and six foot stools, designed by Wright, mimicking the shapeof the home were added later, as was an adaptation of the "March Balloons" design for the Living Room carpet.
A treasure trove of Wright designed furniture and decorative designs abound. At one end of the living room is a Wright designed Music Stand that seats four musicians. Two of the matching chairs are in the living room, and two are in bedrooms on the second floor. According to the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation Archives, there are six Wright-designed quartet stands that are known to exist. 1&2:) There are two at Taliesin; 3) There is one at Taliesin West; 4) There is one at the Dallas Public Library; 5) There is one at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library in Austin, Texas; 6) There is one in the Zimmerman House. 7) But we have located a seventh at the Shavin Residence in Tennessee and, 8) This eighth set here at the Llewellyn Wright House. It did not appear in the photographs taken in 1958.
Two items that appeared in the 1958 photographs and are still in the house today are the single vertical vase and the double vertical vase in the living room.
